Policy Recommendations for a Public Health Roadmap - Advice

Dear All,

Centre for Legislative Research and Advocacy (CLRA) is an organization which promotes human development issues up the political agenda and works closely with Parliamentarians from across the political spectrum and civil society experts such that the two groups can work together and promote progressive policies and legislations in partnerships.

Furthermore, CLRA hosts a number of parliamentary groups where Parliamentarians come together around a common agenda or issue, one of which is the Indian Medical Parliamentarians Forum (IMPF). It comprises of 20 Parliamentarians, all of whom have medical backgrounds. CLRA facilitates meetings between the forum and public health experts so that IMPF members are empowered with the latest health information and research, which they can advocate in the parliament in general and to other parliamentarians in particular.

Keeping in mind CLRA's unique role with the IMPF and its close links with public health organizations and experts in health, Mr Dinesh Trivedi, Hon’ble Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare has requested us to prepare a Road Map on Public Health for the Ministry. The document will highlight the pressing public health priorities, which the present Government needs to act upon in the first year. These priorities will guide the efforts of the Ministry over the coming months. Hon’ble Minister particularly wants to focus on the following critical issues of importance-

1. Developing the Health Infrastructure of the Country.

2. Preventive Care

3. Communicable Diseases

Specific recommendations related to these issues and other public health policy recommendations have been requested. CLRA has begun work developing the document and kindly requests you to send in policy recommendations that you want the Government to take note of and address in its first year in office.

We will organize an official handing over of the document to Mr. Trivedi in the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, which will give partnering organizations an opportunity to introduce their work and concerns to him. This will be organized in the week following the finalization of the document. We would really appreciate if you could send in all recommendations by 29 June 2009.

We, also, request you to widely circulate this amongst your peers and partners and collect their responses so that as many voices as possible are represented in the document that is presented to the Minister.
